Review: The Triangle Episode One

Disclaimer

Since this is a review, I wanted to be clear and up front that I’m friends with the author of this episode. In addition, Dan Koboldt, the author, recommended me for this review, and Serial Box was generous enough to provide me with an Advanced Reader Copy. I’ve worked with Dan on Putting the Science in Fiction and even contributed to his blog.  I’ve been a fan of Dan’s work for a long time now, and that won’t end because we’ve worked together.  I approach reviewing as a fan; so, I’m going to review The Triangle in the same manner.

Review

Serial Box publishes excellent fiction in an episodic manner. I really like what they’re doing over there. With Bookburners, The Witch Who Came in from the Cold, and Born to the Blade, I’ve enjoyed the stories from Serial Box.  (I’m behind on my reading as I’ve only read first seasons.) So, I was excited to get my ARC of The Triangle by Dan Koboldt, Sylvia Spruck Wrigley, and Mindy McGinnis. Episode One starts off the story well. It reminded me of a James Rollins novel. This adventure fiction made a lot of promises, and I’m looking forward to seeing them fulfilled. Episode One gathers a team of experts together to track down ships disappearing in the Bermuda Triangle. Only, recordings from the missing ships indicate more than simple bad weather or mechanical failure. Hints of the supernatural or alien abound. Consider me hooked and curious to see where the mysteries take us.

TL;DR

Dan Koboldt’s opening episode takes us to the Caribbean and launches an adventure story with promise. Check out episode one, and get lost in The Triangle. Highly Recommended.

From the Publisher

Michael Crichton’s Sphere meets Tomb Raider, when a shipwrecked team of experts must unravel the secrets of the Bermuda Triangle before it kills them all.

Since two massive hurricanes hit the Bermuda Triangle region, ships and planes have disappeared, leaving behind a trail of haunting radio transmissions. A covert task force investigates, but finds themselves caught in a third hurricane and shipwrecked on an uncharted island. They discover something shocking there—and not just that they aren’t alone on the island. Can they survive long enough to escape the Triangle and tell the world?

The Story

The Triangle Episode One sets the stage with newly un-retired Navy Admiral David Segarra recruits a team of experts to investigate the disappearance of ships in the Bermuda Triangle. Tessa Dumont, NTSB investigator, specializes in putting the puzzle pieces of crashes together. Michael Hammond is an audio engineer/data recovery specialist with a particular dislike of the NTSB. To round out the team, Alastair McBride, Bermuda Triangle expert, author, and pain in Segarra’s ass, brings light and levity to the investigation. Episode One sets up the backstories and answers the why investigate now question.

Since this is an introduction, what matters is did it hook me? The answer is yes. I’m intrigued by the mystery and interested in the characters. I liked the characters, and there’s enough friction between them to make for an enjoyable journey.

Conclusion

Episode One of The Triangle kicks of an adventure story by teasing us with a mystery and good characters. Lucky for me, I already have Episode Two ready to go.

Highly Recommended

Normally, I’d assign a rating here, but since this is not the full story, I’ll hold off until The Triangle finishes the first season.
